^ Overview

Since 1994 South Africa has played an increasingly important role in the international community and has become an influential member of many of the international organisations to which it belongs. President Mbeki’s pivotal role in the New Partnership for African Development (Nepad) is perhaps the best example of this.

The most important international organisations of which South Africa is a member include the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).

President Mbeki, Vice President Zuma, ex-President Mandela and representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs all play active roles in dispute resolution, particularly in the African context.

International trade with South Africa has grown significantly since 1994, while South Africa has become an increasingly visited tourist destination and host of international conferences and events.
