Mozambique possesses high tourism potential, given it's long coast line with superb beaches, it's tropical climate and it's people who are welcoming by nature.
The existence of several attractions of historical interest and of great diversity in the wildlife and flora are likewise factors to encourage the development of tourism in the country. The extensive coral reefs host a dazzling array of marine life, while off the mainland coast are countless tiny islands to explore. But Mozambique offers much more. Forest-clad mountains, mighty rivers, bubbling hot springs, inland lakes, grasslands- all are there to attempt adventurous travelers seeking new horizons.
Beira, known as the heartland of Mozambique, is one of the oldest cities in Southern Africa. Culturally Mozambique provides a contrast to other countries in the Southern African region, with it's blend of African, Arab and Portuguese influences.
The tourism sector offers major opportunities for investment, since 40% of the existing beds in the country are located in Maputo city. Among the hotels in the country a number are of international standard and the infrastructure of some tourism complexes is of a very high quality. The number of tourists has gradually increased in recent years, particularly South Africans and Zimbabweans.
Various projects are under way to improve the standards and number of airports in Mozambique.
A wide range of animal species exists including lion, leopard, elephant, hippopotamus, buffalo, antelope, giraffe, impala, crocodile, and various species of monkey. There are various national parks suitable for safaris and similar activities. The Gorongosa National Park (3,770km²), once regarded as among the richest in Southern Africa, is currently benefiting from rehabilitation work on its infrastructure and restocking of the animal population.
The coast is rich in corals and fish of rare beauty, providing appropriate conditions for the development of diving and underwater fishing. Lake Niassa, a fresh water lake, also has tourist potential because of the variety of tropical fish that are to be found there. Bazaruto National Park, located on the island with the same name, is the only marine park and constitutes an important attraction thanks to the enormous possibilities it offers for diving and underwater fishing.
