Canadas pulp and industry remains fragmented, although there have been several mergers and acquisitions over the past few years. Although the country has a relatively high annual consumption of paper and board, at 244kg per capita, it is a major exporter (Canadian producers of pulp and paper shipped a record 31 million tons in 1999, over 16 million of which went to USA, thus contributing around $16.7 billion to its Balance of Trade). Recently, exports to China, Japan and Korea have shown growth.
Abitibi-Consolidated is a major player in the country, as is Norways Norske Skog, via its subsidiary Fletcher Challenge Canada.
