Electrical power distribution and transmission on French Overseas Departments such as the island of Reunion consists of small isolated networks and a relatively high number of homes are not connected to the power grid. Therefore, the island is looking towards renewable energy sources such as the processing of ethanol to maximise energy output.
Apart from biofuels as a source of power, the Bois-Rouge power station was built on the island to generate more electricity. The power station has two turbo-generator sets, each steam turbine has the capacity to produce 30 MWE of power. Other power stations have also been built on the island in recent years, namely, the Le Gol and Le Moule power plants. The Bois-Rouge and Le Gol power stations together supply 44% of Reunion's electricity.
