All petroleum products are imported largely from South Africa as the small refinery at Maputo was mothballed in 1984. The state-owned oil company, Petromoc, handles virtually all fuel imports.
In January 2000, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique announced that plans are underway to build a petroleum refinery in Mozambique. The refinery will have a capacity of 10,000 bpd and will be jointly managed by Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The Iranian government is funding the project.
