Oil and gas production are the main forms of mineral extraction in the Netherlands. According to the 2008 BP Statistical Energy Survey, Netherlands had 2007 proved natural gas reserves of 1.24 trillion cubic metres, 0.7% of the world total, and natural gas production of 64.45 billion cubic metres, 2.18% of the world total. According to the same survey, Netherlands had 2007 natural gas consumption of 37.15 billion cubic metres, 1.26% of the world total.

Approximately 40% of the production is from offshore. Nederlandse Aadolie Maatschappji (NAM), owned equally by Shell and Esso, produces some 75% of the total, including over 95% of the onshore production. Other major producers included Total/Final/Elf and BP Nederland with some 12% and 4% of the total, respectively. According to the 2008 BP Statistical Energy Survey, Netherlands consumed an average of 1043.75 thousand barrels a day of oil in 2007, 1.22% of the world total and a change from 2006 of 1.16 tbpd. According to the 2008 BP Statistical Energy Survey, Netherlands had a 2007 refinery capacity of 1274.28 thousand barrels a day, 1.44% of the world total.
