Australia - Mining: Vanadium Mining
 - Overview

^ Overview

Australia is an emerging producer of vanadium, with the development of the world class Windimurra project in Western Australia. Windimurra has proven ore reserves of 106 Mt and will be the world’s largest vanadium mine, supplying 10% of global demand from its annual production of 15.8 Mlb (7 200 t) of vanadium pentoxide. Swiss based XStrata AG are developing the mine, with production beginning in early 2000. To date, the mine has been operating at 75% capacity and intends ramping up to full production, estimated to be 17.6 Mlb per annum capacity.

Dominion Mining are still assessing the feasibility of the Balla Balla Vanadium project, located in the Pilbara region of far northern Western Australia, approximately 100 kilometres south-west of Port Hedland. Balla Balla has a total inferred resource of 117 Mt grading at 0.7% V205. An initial production of 6 800 t of vanadium is anticipated with a 20 year mine life.
