Europe's only major producers have been Spain and France, with Spain producing 30t
of uranium from a deposit in the Salamanca Province. This facility has been extracting low grade uranium resources for over 25 years and closed in 2000. France produced 240 t in 2001 from only one active mine, with closure planned for 2001.
Cogema France has been a traditional producer of uranium; however, declining
reserves (France has less than 1% of global reserves) has reduced production from its only operation, Jouac.
Cogema has operations in the CIS, Africa and Australia.
Empresa Nacional del Uranio SA is Spain’s main producer.
