Canada - Mining: Uranium Mining
 - Overview

^ Overview

Canada is the world's largest producer of uranium, mainly from massive deposits situated in Saskatchewan. Canada produced 11,294t U3O8 in 2003 (representing 25% of global output).

Canada's main producers are Cogema Resources and Cameco, which operate several mines in Canada as well as the USA. Through a series of mergers and restructuring, the two companies are now developing several projects jointly. Cameco is the largest uranium producer in the world. Although Cameco has traditionally been the larger of the two, Cogema has gained an interest in nearly all of Canada's uranium mining operations. Cogema Resources, a wholly owned subsidiary of French Cogema is responsible for all Canadian operations.

Cogema Resources' only solely owned mine, Cluff Lake suspended operations at the end of 2002. However the development of two major high-grade mines at Cigar Lake and McArthur River should maintain Canada's dominance into the next century. Cogema Resources has a 37% interest in the Cigar Lake deposit, which is the world's second largest high-grade uranium deposit. Cigar Lake has reserves of 353 Mlb U3O8 at an average grade of 14% U3O8. Production at this underground operation began in 2002. The mine is operated by Cameco, who is the majority shareholder at Cigar Lake.

The McArthur River deposit, in which Cogema Resources has a 30% interest, is located in Northern Saskatchewan. Proven and probable reserves have been estimated at 845 000 t grading 21.2% U3O8. McArthur River was commissioned in November 2000 and is expected to produce 18 Mlb U3O8 at full capacity. Cameco owns the remaining interest in McArthur River and is the operator of the facility.

The world's largest uranium mine at Key Lake closed down in 2000, due to exhausted reserves. However, due to its proximity to McArthur River, ore will be transported to Key Lake for processing. The mine had been in operation since 1983 and produced 0.4 Mlb of U3O8 in 2000, reflecting its decline in reserves. Cogema Resources has a 17% interest in Key Lake, with Cameco the remaining majority interest and operatorship. Cameco have re opened the Rabbit Lake facility that was closed in the late 1990's as a result of the low uranium spot prices. The mine plans to produce 2.5 Mlb U3O8 initially, ramping up to 6 Mlb/year.
