Brazil, Peru and Bolivia are major producers of tin, with these three
countries occupying the worlds leading positions after Indonesia and China. Latin
America produces 29% of global tin. Tin production has been declining over the
past few years from Brazil 13 700 t in 2000 down from 14 600 t in 1999.
The drop is due to near exhaustion of alluvial tin mining reserves. Brazil
hosts 16% of global resources and currently exports about half of its production. Peru produced 30 000 t in 1999, representing an increase from 25 747 t in 1998. Peru has 4% of global resources.
Bolivia produced 10 542 t in 1998 down substantially from 14 119 t in 1997.
It appears that most of Bolivias tin mines were in the process of being
privatised by the French Investment Bank, Paribas and the government run tin
smelting organisation Empressa Nacional de Fundiciones (ENAF). Bolivia has 6%
of global resources.
The following companies are active in Brazil, the Paranapanema Group, Cesbra
and Best. Perus known producer is Minsur.
