Chile is not a major coal producer, with most of the country's coal being imported. Chile has recoverable coal reserves in the region of 1,300 million short tons (Mmst). According to the 2008 BP Statistical Energy Survey, Chile had 2007 coal consumption of 3.3 million tonnes oil equivalent. Coal consumption tends to fluctuate, as coal is used largely as a back-up to hydropower. The privatised Empresa Nacional del Carbon (Enacar) has operations located in the Lota/Coronel area and in the extreme south on Tierra del Fuego. Chile has two mines, operated by Empresa Nacional del Carbón (Enacar) and La Compañía Carbonífera San Pedro de Catamutún (CCSPC), respectively.
