African chrome is produced from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, which has 80% of global reserves and produces approximately 50% of global chromite. Nearly all of Zimbabwe's chrome production is sourced from the Great Dyke and consumed for local ferrochrome plants. Madagascar also has a small chromite mining industry. Chromite is generally produced as a by-product of PGM mining and is normally stockpiled before selling to the ferrochrome industry.
Samancor is one of the world's largest ferrochrome producers and produces chromite from its two main
operational centers in the Bushveld complex. The mines, at current production
rates have a life of mine of approximately 200 years. Other major producers include XStrata and SaChrome.
In Zimbabwe, Zimasco operates several high grade operations along the Great Dyke that also hosts significant PGM resources.
KRAOMA, the Madagascar state owned chrome company produces approximately 100 000 t
Chrome each year.
