Latin America produces 32% of global bauxite. The continent produced an estimated 2.28 Mt of aluminium in 2003 an increase of 2% from the previous year as output continued to recover from the setback in 2001 resulting form the shortages in Brazil and technical problems in Venezuela. Output was constrained by the closure of the Vera Cruz smeleter in Mexico in August 2003.
CVRD has investments in local bauxite mining operations with BHP Billiton owning
two smelting operations in Brazil.

Bauxite are the major producers of bauxite in Latin America.
Alcan has a 12.5% interest in the Brazilian bauxite producer
Mineração Rio do Norte. Most of this production is shipped to
Canada for smelting.
