Output in Western Europe rose 3.6% to 4.07 Mt in 2003 from 3.93 Mt in 2002, with the most significant rise occurring in Norway due to continuing expansion at Norsk Hydro's Sunndalsora smelter. French output decreased as a result of Pechiney's (now Alcan Inc) Auzat plant.
In Iceland Nordural signed agreements with
Sudernes Heating Service and Reykjavik Energy, in 2003, to build an 80
MW power plant to meet the expanded Grundtartangi
smelter requirements. If things proceed on schedule, the expansion should be up and running at full capacity by 1June 2006.
