Australia is the No 1 global producer, with 37% of global production,
followed by Guinea, Brazil and Jamaica. Australia produced 44 million tonnes
bauxite in 1998. The most significant deposits of bauxite in Australia are at
Weipa in Queensland, Gove (Northern Territory) and in the Darling Range and
Mitchell Plateau areas of Western Australia. An average grade of around 27%
Al2O3is required as a minimum cut off to make a deposit economically viable.
Indonesia produced 1 million tonnes bauxite in 1998 from 3 Mines.
Alcan / Comalco has 10 bauxite mines/reserves in six countries, totalling
about 400 million tonnes of demonstrated bauxite reserves in subsidiaries,
joint ventures and related companies. In Australia, it obtains bauxite ore from
an agreement with Comalco to provide its Queensland Alumina Smelter (of which
it has a 21% interest). Alcan has also obtained 100% of the Gove bauxite mine and refinery located in the Northern Territory.
Rio Tinto has a 72% share in the Weipa Deposit.
Billitons interest in Worsley Alumina facility also includes
Worsleys bauxite mine near Boddington.
