The electronics sector is called upon to play a very important role in the industrial diversification strategy of the country.

The operations that are presently conducted in Mauritius are: - manufacture of high quality quartz crystal - assembly of watch movements - assembly of pH meters - high precision coil winding - assembly of TV sets and VCR's - parts and components for consumer electronics International companies operating in the electronics industry have found the necessary conditions which allow them to flourish and are integrating their operations in Mauritius. Besides the attractive package of fiscal incentives, a stable economy and attractive market access, the hourly wage costs in Mauritius are roughly 5% of the prevailing rate in Germany, 10% of those in the UK and Ireland. Similarly, it is only a sixth of the rate in Singapore, Taiwan and Korea.

According to a comparative cost analysis conducted by experts, the following products can be competitively manufactured in Mauritius: Printed circuit boards, Security devices and systems, Smart cards (IC), Modular power converters, Magnetics and Decoding boxes for modems and satellite TV's.

The Industrial and Vocational Training Board (IVTB) operates a school of electronics in collaboration with Siemens to train technicians in the electrical and electronic sectors.
