The leading ISPs in Mozambique are listed below. As noted below, all ISPs
that are not connected by satellite to international ISPs are connected to the
TDM. TDM only provides services to the ISPs and not to end-users.
There are now POPs present in most provincial capitals provided by Teledata,
an associate company of TDM. There is also access from other areas through
normal dial-up connections to any of the providers.
In a bid to increase access to the rural communities, two telecentres that
have been set up and connected to the University (CIUEM) to pilot the
sustainability of telecentres in rural areas.
CIUEM is undoubtedly the pioneer of Internet in Mozambique and continues to
be the focus of networking in the country. CIUEM is one of several centres
attached to the only major university in Mozambique, although small Catholic
universities have been established in Beira and Nampula. The Centre has been
receiving support since 1987 from the Dutch government in the form of staffing,
funds for training, and technical and scientific assistance to development
capacity and skills.
Consequently, there are notable developments at CIUEM. There is a mixed
networking environ-ment with servers running Redhat Linux 6.0, Solaris 2.6,
Solaris 2.4, Novell Netware 4.1, Windows NT 4.0, BSDI 4.0, HP-UX 9.04 and
10.20. Workstations use mostly Windows 95/98 access routers from Portmaster and
a pool of modems for the ISP part. Others include Cisco routers, mostly 2500
series and some 1600 series. Since the university is scattered across the city
in different campuses and administration buildings, a wireless network to
interconnect the campuses has been implemented. Presently, this network only
connects the main campus to the administration building downtown.
The university has its own link to the Internet through a satellite
connection to the US. This link is a shared link of 1mbps downlink and 256kbps
uplink.
Apart from the university, there are only two other providers that are
connected to the outside world. These providers are the TDM and Teledata.
Until recently, CIUEM has been the only source of low-cost Internet and
e-mail access in the country. The Internet service is available to the public,
academic community as well as NGOs.
Besides CIUEM, Teledata, a joint venture between TDM and Marconi, has been a
major provider of national and international connectivity in Mozambique through
its X.25 PSDN service. Apart from Maputo, the service has now been expanded to
two other major cities, Beira and Nampula. Teledatas Internet service has
recently been introduced.
