The Industrial Property Act (IPA) has replaced the old Trade Marks Act and
Patents and Designs Protection Act, which protected only items regis-tered in
the United Kingdom or South Africa. IPA fully complies with the Trade Related

The act provides for an independent registry with a Commissioner for Patents
but issues of imple-mentation are yet to be addressed.
Intellectual property rights are addressed in the Copyright Act and also the
Industrial Property Act. The Copyright Act is rather outdated and was drafted
in 1965. The Botswana parliament plans to amend the copyright act.
