- Overview

BTC operates the Botsgate Internet backbone available to corporate customers and Internet ser-vices providers to which it sells bandwidth. Bot-snet is a wholly owned ISP subsidiary of BTC launched in November 1999 to provide email and Internet services to end-users.

Mega Internet, Intertswana, 4site and Global Access are other ISPs in Botswana providing web hosting, design and Internet access services to a wide range of companies in Botswana.

BTC administers the ‘.bw’ domain. There are an estimated 7 000 users.

4Site HOLDINGS (PTY) Ltd. was registered in late 1998 in a partnership with the De Beers and Debswana citizen empowerment company (PEO Holdings (PTY) Ltd.) and Emaxalot Investments (PTY) Ltd.

Intertswana offers full e-mail and web services, including web based e-mail access services.

The Industrial Property Act (IPA) has replaced the old Trade Marks Act and Patents and Designs Protection Act, which protected only items regis-tered in the United Kingdom or South Africa. IPA fully complies with the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs) provisions.

The act provides for an independent registry with a Commissioner for Patents but issues of imple-mentation are yet to be addressed.

Intellectual property rights are addressed in the Copyright Act and also the Industrial Property Act. The Copyright Act is rather outdated and was drafted in 1965. The Botswana parliament plans to amend the copyright act.
