Fifteen years of peace and radical reforms have turned Mozambique into one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. The country was one of the first in the region to reform its telecommunications sector, immediately after a peace accord had been signed in 1992. The mobile sub-sector has experienced outstanding growth rates, with 3.3 million mobile phone users recorded in Mozambique in 2007.
The market leader in Mozambique’s mobile sector is MCel, currently 74% government owned, although the government does have plans to sell 20% of its stake. Vodacom is the other service provider in Mozambique. The country’s regulatory authority has confirmed that a feasibility study on the issuing of a third licence has been completed, but a tender is still to be issued.
MCel plans to deploy a 3G/HSDPA network in late 2008 which will cover the areas of Maputo, Beira and Nampula.
Mozambique recorded 200 000 internet users in March 2008.
