Ghana produces rubber, cement, aluminium and pharmaceuticals in its chemicals/chemicals related industry. Cement is produced in large amounts - 680 000 metric tons in 1991, as is unwrought aluminium - 175 000 tons. To support these industries, the country imports a comparatively large amount of imports, just over 11% of all imported commodities. Few, if any, chemicals are exported.
Ghana has a number of fairly well established plants. The Kaiser Aluminium and Chemical Corporation has a 90 % holding in one of the largest companies, the Volta Aluminium Co. The Ghanaian government accelerated its privatisation strategy in 1993 and has sold a significant number of shares in major companies, including the Ghana Industrial Holding Co's pharmaceutical subsidiary and the Bonsa Tyre Co (including its rubber estate).
