Over a third of the labour force are employed in the agriculture, fishing and forestry sector and commercial farming makes use of the country's arable land to produce citrus and wine. The other main crops in Morocco include wheat, barley, maize and vegetables.
Sugar cane, sugar beet, olives and cotton are mostly produced for domestic use while citrus, tomatoes, canned fruit, vegetables and wine are the main export products.
Drought in 1997 led to a decline in the agricultural industry, but rainfall later in the year provided a recovery period. The cereal harvest in Morocco is expected to decline and cereal operators are expected to import a large amount of soft wheat.
The fishing industry provides canned fish, fresh fish and shellfish which contribute to a small portion of the total exports in Morocco. Agadir, Safi,and Tan-Tan are the main fishing ports.
Cork and timber are produced from the forests in Morocco.
