Ethiopia: Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing
 - Overview

^ Overview

The economy of Ethiopia is predominantly agricultural. The main crops are grains: wheat, barley, teff (a food-grain native to Ethiopia), sorghum, maize and millet. Ethiopia has the largest stock of livestock in Africa.

The country's main exports are coffee and leather. Ethiopia is the third largest producer of coffee in Africa. In early 1999, the government instituted a credit guarantee scheme to promote coffee and livestock exports. Ethiopia is very vulnerable to the effects of fluctuations in commodity prices (particularly coffee) and to drought as the economy is largely agricultural and there is very little irrigation. Ethiopia extended its sugar production capacity in 1999 and hopes to earn US$22 pa from 10 000 tons of sugar exports.
