Explanatory notes
Foreign bank notes for holidays/private visits are allowed within the limits mentioned in 1 and 2 below.
1. For visits to Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zaire, Zambia and the Indian Ocean Islands:
R6 000 per adult and R3 000 per child under 12 years of age, per calendar year is allowed.
2. For visits to all other countries: R23 000 per adult and R11 500 per child under 12 years of age, per calendar year is allowed.
3. An export permit (form A) must be produced in respect of foreign bank notes in excess of the amounts mentioned above.

The following have been exempted from the above restrictions:
(a) South African Reserve Banknotes: All persons leaving the Republic may be allowed R500

(b) Foreign banknotes
(i) Foreign visitors leaving the Republic may take any amount on condition that they were originally bought such bank notes into the Republic or represent the proceeds of instruments of exchange brought into and exchanged in the Republic by them.
(ii) South African Residents: Permission from the South African Reserve Bank or authorised dealer in foreign exchange in the form passport endorsement. (See notes 1 to 3)
