The JSE was established on 8 November 1887 in central Johannesburg, and stands at the corner of Commissioner and Simmonds Streets. It is licensed as an exchange under the Securities Services Act, 2004. and is the largest exchange in Africa, having evolved from a traditional floor based equities trading market to a modern securities exchange providing fully electronic trading, clearing and settlement in equities, financial and agricultural derivatives and other associated instruments.
